Headaches caused by neck complaints

Muscle, joint, and disc injuries to the neck are common causes of headaches. Unfortunately, this is often misdiagnosed and commonly results in the sufferer not receiving the correct treatment. The medical term for a headache caused by a musculoskeletal injury is a Cervicogenic headache. Around 3% of the population is estimated to suffer from Cervicogenic headaches regularly. For anyone suffering from a Cervicogenic headache, treatment is needed for the injured structures of the neck, referring the pain, not just to the area where the pain is felt. Sadly, millions of people are paying for the wrong treatment or unnecessary medication that won't correct the complaint.

Symptoms of Cervicogenic headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are often caused by facet joint inflammation/irritation, nerve compression, or disc injuries in the neck. It is the top three joints, discs, and nerves that refer pain to the head. These symptoms are outlined in the diagram below.

●    The vast majority of Cervicogenic headaches are felt on one side of the head, and neck.

●    However, the pain experienced can be felt in multiple areas on the same side. Pain may extend toward the forehead, area around the eye, temple, and ear.

●    The pain sensation is typically dull, not throbbing, but can become moderate and sometimes severe.

●    A sharp shooting pain is an indicator of nerve compression.

●    Aggravated by neck movements or sustained awkward neck positions.

●    Pain may also be felt in the shoulder and arm (this is referred from the areas of the neck below the 3rd vertebrae).

●    True Cervicogenic headaches may be relieved by anti-inflammatory but not migraine medication.

Headaches caused by trigger points in muscles are also very common. This is outlined separately in the section below as the areas of the head they refer to are different locations than facet joint irritation or nerve root compression.

Muscle injuries and trigger points that cause headaches

Trigger points are knots that can develop in tight, overused, injured muscles. A distinct feature of trigger points is that they don’t just cause pain in the muscles they are located in, they can also refer pain to other areas of the body. The diagram below illustrates the common referral patterns from muscles in the neck into the head caused by trigger points in the neck. If you are experiencing headaches similar to those in the diagram below, booking a consultation and treatment is especially worthwhile.

Our lead Osteopath, Mark, has written a thesis on trigger points, and has a thorough understanding of the location of all the trigger points in the neck where treatment needs to be applied, and the treatment the is required to relieve them. He also has 15 years' experience of successfully treating trigger points in all areas of the body.
