What is Osteopathy

An holistic approach to getting you pain free and correcting the cause of your injury

Osteopathy is an approach to healthcare that examines, diagnoses, and treats the musculoskeletal system, the framework of the body. The primary focus is improving postural alignment and how the body moves, intending to relieve pain and injury. The main tenant of osteopathy states the body is a self-healing, self-maintaining, self-regulating mechanism, and treatment should always be administered to promote these factors. These principles ensure Osteopathy is practised safely, encouraging the natural healing response, and improving general health and vitality.

As Osteopaths, our speciality is treating complaints of the spine. However, we are also just as effective in treating shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle injuries.

A Brief History of Osteopathy?

Osteopathy was founded by Dr Andrew Still in 1874 in the United States of America. After years of witnessing the barbaric effects the medical practices of the day had on his patients, Dr Still set about developing a natural noninvasive approach to treatment. His philosophy was based on encouraging the most effective form of medicine available both then & now; the body healing itself. A personal experience that inspired him to focus on the body's structure came from the relief he experienced as a child from self-treatment to his neck when suffering from debilitating headaches.

The clinic Dr Still set up in Kirksville, Missouri was a huge success. After experiencing firsthand how effective his treatments had become, he set up a college enabling him to teach his methods and techniques. In 1892 The American School of Osteopathy was opened in Kirksville. It was here three of the underlying principles of Osteopathy were set out.

  • Structure (how the body is aligned) and function (how the body moves) are reciprocally interrelated.

  • The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

  • Rational treatment is based on understanding the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Dr Martin Littlejohn, an academic from Glasgow sought out Dr Still for treatment for a complaint he was suffering with while working in the States . He was so impressed with the results, and saw so much potential in the field of Osteopathy he quit his job as the president at Columbia University, and started studying under the tutorship of Dr Still. He eventually became Dean at the American school of Osteopathy. After occasionally returning to Britain to lecture and teach the principles, and application of Osteopathy he eventually returned permanently to set up the British school of Osteopathy in 1917. The General Osteopathic Council was set up, and the Osteopathy register for Great Britain was opened in 1939. In 1993 the Osteopaths act was passed in parliament.
